Escape the busy streets of Hanoi and reconnect with nature on our Pu Luong Eco Homestay & Local Market: 3 Days tour. It’s designed for responsible travellers, this immersive journey combines peaceful mountain scenery with authentic encounters in the Thai and Muong communities.
Unlike conventional Pu Luong Tours, this itinerary places local life at the heart of the experience. You will stay at a family-run eco homestay, walk through terraced fields, visit the traditional Pho Doan Market. As well as cooking with seasonal ingredients and discover how villagers use bamboo waterwheels to irrigate their crops.
Besides, Pho Doan Market is normally held on Thursday and Sunday mornings, so the standard tour should depart from Hanoi on Wednesday or Saturday. If your dates do not match a market day, we can replace the visit with a smaller village market or another community-based activity.
With gentle trekking, farm-to-table meals and plenty of time to appreciate the landscape. So, this three-day tour is ideal for first-time visitors seeking a slower and more meaningful way to explore rural Vietnam.
Day 1: Hanoi – Pu Luong – Don Village and Eco Homestay
Your journey begins in the morning with pickup from your hotel in Hanoi Old Quarter. Then, you will leave the capital behind and travel southwest through the countryside toward Pu Luong Nature Reserve.
The drive normally takes approximately four to five hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. There will be a short comfort stop along the way.
On arrival, you will enjoy lunch prepared with fresh regional ingredients before checking in at a family-run eco homestay. Depending on availability, accommodation may be in a traditional stilt-house room or a private bungalow constructed with local materials.
In the afternoon, you will follow our local tour guide on a leisurely walk through Don Village. The path passes traditional houses, vegetable gardens and terraced fields beneath limestone mountains. Along the way, our tour guide will explain how local Thai families cultivate rice and manage water for their farms.
There will be time to stop at scenic viewpoints and speak with villagers when appropriate. Please ask before photographing local residents, particularly elderly people and children.
Next, you will return to the homestay and enjoy a traditional dinner featuring dishes. Such as grilled meat, mountain vegetables, bamboo-tube rice and seasonal soup. Vegetarian food can be prepared with advance notice.
After having dinner, you will relax in the quiet mountain atmosphere or join an optional cultural exchange with the host family.
Local guide’s note: Village paths may be uneven or muddy after rain. Wear shoes with reliable grip and carry only a small daypack during the walk.

Day 2: Pho Doan Local Market – Hieu Village – Cooking Experience
In the morning, you should wake up early to listen the sounds of village life and enjoy breakfast at the homestay.
After enjoying breakfast, you will travel to Pho Doan Market, one of the area’s best-known traditional markets. Held on Thursday and Sunday mornings, it brings together people from Thai and Muong communities living across the surrounding valleys.
From here, you will walk through stalls filled with forest herbs, seasonal vegetables, rice, handmade textiles, farming tools and everyday household products. In addition, our tour guide will help explain unfamiliar ingredients and local trading customs. Rather than treating the market as a quick photo stop, you will have time to observe how it functions as an important social meeting place.
Besides, you may help select vegetables and spices for the day’s cooking activity. Buying directly from small vendors ensures that more tourism income remains within the community.
Next, you will continue to visit Hieu Village, a peaceful Thai settlement surrounded by forest and terraced fields. You also follow a countryside trail toward Hieu Waterfall, passing small farms and stilt houses along the way.
Note, weather and water conditions permitting, you may cool your feet or swim in a safe natural pool. The limestone can be slippery, so always follow your guide’s instructions and avoid climbing wet rocks.
At a local home, you can learn how several regional dishes are prepared. Depending on the season, the menu may include:
- Rice cooked in bamboo tubes
- Grilled chicken or pork with mountain spices
- Stir-fried seasonal vegetables
- Banana-flower salad
- Fresh herbs and dipping sauces
Then, you will enjoy the meal together before spending more time discovering the village. In the late afternoon, you will return to your homestay for a rest.
Dinner is served at the homestay. The evening is free for conversation with your hosts or quiet relaxation overlooking the valley.
Local guide’s note: Pho Doan is a working rural market rather than a staged tourist attraction. Carry small Vietnamese banknotes, ask before photographing vendors and avoid blocking narrow aisles.

The rafting activity is subject to water level and weather conditions. It may be shortened or replaced with a village walk when the river is unsafe.
