Leave the city behind and discover the rural soul of Northwest Vietnam on our Mai Chau Green Trekking & Farming with Locals: 3 Days experience. Moreover, it is designed for travellers who value nature, cultural exchange and responsible travel. So, the journey combines peaceful countryside walks with hands-on farming and meaningful time alongside local families.

Unlike conventional Mai Chau Tours, this itinerary travels beyond the busiest corners of Lac Village. You will follow small trails through rice paddies, bamboo groves and White Thai communities. Such as Pom Coong, Na Phon, Xam Khoe and Mai Hich. Along the way, local hosts will introduce you to seasonal farm work, traditional cooking, bamboo weaving and everyday village life.

Especially, Mai Chau’s landscape is characterized by rice fields, limestone mountains and villages. Where rice cultivation and traditional weaving remain closely connected to local livelihoods. Two nights in locally operated stilt-house accommodation and meals prepared with regional produce ensure that more of your visit directly supports the host community.

Therefore, this is an immersive yet accessible adventure for first-time trekkers, families and environmentally conscious travellers. Who seeking a slower, more authentic side of Vietnam.

Detailed Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Hanoi – Mai Chau Valley – Lac, Pom Coong and Na Phon Villages

Meals: Lunch and Dinner | Trekking: Approximately 5–7 km

In the morning, our tour guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel in central Hanoi. Afterward, you will leave the busy capital and travel through the countryside toward Mai Chau, with a short refreshment stop along the way.

As the road approaches the mountains, you will enjoy changing views of farmland, forested hills and limestone valleys. If visibility and road conditions permit, we stop at a scenic viewpoint near Thung Khe Pass for a panoramic introduction to Mai Chau Valley.

You will arrive at a family-run homestay around midday. After meeting your hosts, you will enjoy lunch featuring regional ingredients. Dishes may include steamed rice, grilled pork or chicken, seasonal vegetables, bamboo shoots and fresh herbs.

In the afternoon, you will begin a gentle orientation trek through Lac, Pom Coong and Na Phon villages. These communities lie among rice paddies and traditional stilt houses and can be explored comfortably on foot. Especially, Lac and Pom Coong are recognized community-tourism villages in Mai Chau Valley.

Next, you will walk along narrow field paths as your guide explains the valley’s irrigation channels, planting cycle and traditional house design. Depending on the season, you may see farmers transplanting young rice, tending buffaloes or gathering crops.

Then, you will stop at a family workshop to meet a local craftsperson. From here, you can watch cotton or bamboo being prepared and try a simple weaving activity. In addition, you can purchase directly from the maker is optional but provides more transparent support than buying mass-produced souvenirs.

Later, you will return to the homestay before dark and help your host pick herbs or vegetables for dinner. You will join a relaxed cooking session and learn how several everyday White Thai dishes are prepared.

After enjoying dinner, you may attend an optional traditional music and dance performance organized by villagers.

Local guide’s note: Paths between the paddies can be narrow and muddy after rain. Walk in single file and avoid stepping onto planted fields, even when searching for a better photograph.

Overnight: Local stilt-house homestay in Mai Chau

Day 2: Xam Khoe – Mai Hich Green Trek and Farming Experience

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner | Trekking: Approximately 12–14 km

In the morning, you will wake up to listen the sounds of the countryside, nature and enjoy breakfast at the homestay. Then, you will transfer a short distance from the busier central valley to the quieter farming area around Xam Khoe.

Firstly, you will begin the main trek of the tour along village lanes, rice paddies and low forest trails. The route continues toward Mai Hich, passing small settlements where tourism remains secondary to agriculture. Moreover, our local tour guide will adjust the trail according to rainfall, crop activity and the group’s walking ability.

Along the way, you will learn to recognize local crops and useful plants. Depending on the season, the fields may contain rice, maize, cassava, peanuts or vegetables. A local farmer will explain how families coordinate irrigation and share agricultural work.

Reach a family farm around midday and join a seasonal activity, which may include:

  • Planting or transplanting rice seedlings
  • Cutting ripe rice with a hand sickle
  • Preparing soil or vegetable beds
  • Watering and collecting garden vegetables
  • Harvesting maize, peanuts or seasonal produce
  • Feeding chickens, ducks or buffaloes
  • Collecting herbs for lunch

Note, the activity is educational and participatory rather than staged. Visitors are encouraged to follow the farmer’s instructions and work only where invited.

Next, you will wash up and help prepare lunch using ingredients from the garden. You can also share the meal with your hosts and learn about local food traditions. As well as family farming and the role of community tourism in supporting rural incomes. In addition, visitors to Mai Chau who can participate in daily local activities, including seasonal rice harvesting experiences.

After a rest, you will continue trekking through bamboo groves and quiet hamlets. There will be several opportunities to photograph wooden stilt houses, field workers and the mountain landscape. Always ask before taking close-up photographs of residents.

Afterward, you will return to the homestay in the late afternoon. Here, you will enjoy time to relax, take a shower or walk around the village before dinner.

Local guide’s note: Start early during the warmer months. The valley can become hot and humid at midday, while shaded paths may remain slippery after rain. Carry water, wear shoes with a good grip and use sun protection.

Overnight: Local stilt-house homestay in Mai Chau

Day 3: Sunrise Farm Walk – Local Market – Mai Chau to Hanoi

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch | Trekking: Approximately 4–6 km

You will wake up early for an optional sunrise walk. The morning is one of the most peaceful times in Mai Chau: mist may rest over the paddies. While farmers and buffaloes begin moving through the fields.

After enjoying breakfast, you will take a short countryside trek through less-travelled lanes around Na Phon and the surrounding agricultural area. From here, you will visit a household garden or small farm for a final seasonal experience. Depending on local conditions, you may help collect vegetables, prepare animal feed or learn how rice is dried and stored after harvest.

Then, you will continue to visit a local market when its operating schedule permits. Here, you can walk through displays of vegetables, herbs, fruit, bamboo shoots and other regional produce. Besides, our tour guide will explain unfamiliar ingredients and help you interact respectfully with vendors.

In the noon, you will return to the homestay for lunch. Next, you will say goodbye to your hosts and depart for Hanoi in the early afternoon. Arrival in central Hanoi is expected in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on traffic and weather.

Local guide’s note: For attractive field photographs, early morning and late afternoon usually offer softer light. Golden rice is often associated with the harvest windows around May–June and September–October, although exact dates vary each year according to weather and planting schedules.

  • Trek along green rice fields, vegetable gardens and quiet village trails.
  • Explore Lac, Pom Coong, Na Phon, Xam Khoe and Mai Hich
  • Join seasonal farming activities with a local White Thai family.
  • Learn how rice and vegetables are cultivated in Mai Chau Valley.

Accommodation Experience

The selected accommodation is a locally managed stilt-house homestay rather than a conventional hotel. It offers a closer connection with village life and helps tourism income remain within the community.

Standard accommodation normally includes:

  • Shared sleeping space with individual mattresses
  • Mosquito nets, pillows and blankets
  • Shared bathrooms with hot water
  • Basic electricity and charging points
  • Locally prepared breakfast and dinner
  • Refill station for drinking water

Private rooms may be available on request, subject to the particular homestay and travel date.

Guests should expect simple rural comfort. Roosters, farm activity and village sounds may begin early in the morning.

Food Experience

Meals emphasize fresh, seasonal and locally produced ingredients. Typical dishes may include:

  • Steamed or sticky rice
  • Grilled chicken or pork
  • Freshwater fish
  • Bamboo shoots
  • Stir-fried seasonal vegetables
  • Garden herbs and dipping sauces
  • Local fruit
  • Vegetarian dishes arranged in advance

Please advise us of allergies or dietary requirements when booking. Vegetarian food is available, but strict vegan, gluten-free or severe-allergy meals require advance coordination because rural kitchens share utensils and preparation areas.

Best Time for Trekking and Photography

  • March to May: Mild to warm weather, fresh vegetation and active farming.
  • May to June: Possible golden rice and harvest scenes in parts of the valley.
  • July to August: Lush landscapes, but hotter weather and a greater chance of rain.
  • September to October: Green-to-golden paddies and excellent rural photography.
  • November to February: Cooler and often drier, though mornings can be misty or cold.

The most comfortable trekking conditions generally occur during the drier months, while rice-field appearance depends on the annual farming calendar. Photography and harvest dates should therefore be treated as seasonal estimates rather than guarantees.

What to Pack

  • Lightweight trekking shoes with good grip
  • Breathable clothing and a light long-sleeved layer
  • Warm jacket from November to February
  • Compact raincoat or poncho
  • Hat, sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Small daypack
  • Personal medication
  • Quick-drying towel
  • Camera protection for rain and farm dust
  • A small amount of cash for crafts, drinks and tips

Avoid bringing large hard-shell luggage to the homestay. An overnight bag or soft backpack is much easier to carry upstairs and store in a traditional house.

Responsible Travel Guidelines

  • Carry a refillable bottle and avoid disposable plastic where possible.
  • Remain on marked paths and field boundaries.
  • Do not pick crops or enter farms without permission.
  • Ask before photographing residents, especially children.
  • Dress respectfully when entering homes or community spaces.
  • Remove footwear when requested by the host.
  • Keep noise low in the early morning and evening.
  • Buy crafts directly from local makers where possible.
  • Do not distribute money, sweets or gifts directly to children.
  • Use water and electricity carefully at the homestay.
  • Follow the guide’s instructions when handling tools or approaching animals.

Important Notes

  • The itinerary may be adjusted because of weather, trail conditions or agricultural work.
  • Farming experiences are seasonal; no specific crop or task can be guaranteed.
  • Trekking distances are approximate and can be adapted for children or less-active travelers.
  • Rice fields may be green, golden, newly planted or fallow depending on the travel date.
  • Basic fitness and the ability to walk on uneven ground are recommended.
  • During heavy rain, the guide may replace slippery trails with safer village routes.
  • Mai Chau is well suited to gentle cycling and walking between rice fields and villages, but quieter trails provide a more intimate community experience than the busiest tourism areas.

Why Choose This Green Mai Chau Tour?

This journey is built around local participation instead of quick sightseeing. The walking routes, homestays, meals, farming activities and craft visits are arranged with village residents. Small-group operation reduces pressure on narrow trails and allows genuine interaction between guests and hosts.

By traveling slowly and staying locally, you gain a deeper understanding of Mai Chau while contributing more directly to the people who care for its fields, traditions and rural landscape.

So glad I found Impress Travel

At first, I was just planning a trip to Hanoi, Halong Bay, and Ninh Binh for my small family.
Some close friends heard about our plans and wanted to join the trip. Eventually the group grew to be 7 families, with 25 adults and children of varying interests and expectations.
While I was excited at the prospect of touring Vietnam with good friends, I felt anxiously responsible to ascertain that everything must be well organized and everyone satisfied. This is why I am so very, very glad to have found Impress Travel. Mr. Mark responded quickly to all my inquiries, customized a wonderful trip according to the group's preferences, tirelessly worked out every detail for our 7-day trip, all at a reasonable price. Our guide, Trung, is knowledgeable, helpful, quick to respond to any need, and well-loved by everyone in the group. All my friends found this a marvelous trip, filled with beautiful memories, very much to my delight and relief!

Hanoi,Sapa,Hanoi,Danang,Hanoi 8D7N Online searching for a reliable travel agent n come across Impress Travel. Contacted

Accommodations were good especially Thang Long Espana Hotel (the Hotel Management automated upgraded us to VIP rooms. Is really unexpected). Overalled tours n places visited very well but only local guides r not good organizing the itineraries. Especially at Sapa Lao Cai and Cat Cat Villages walking tours push to the same day about 8hours for 7km (which is on 1st&2nd days arrival) so tiring. Lunch not good enough 4 so many hours of walking. In Danang Bana Hill the local guide shd arrange 2 visit Bana Hill 1st n not last coz' spend a short time n not nice photos taken due to rain (went in morning time no rain).
Overall tours, hotels, transportation, prices are strongly recommended. Especially Daniel Dang Impress Travel for welcoming and bye-bye wishes.
Daniel Dang tks from 8 of us having a wonderful time n memorable trip for 8D7N Sapa, Hanoi, Danang with Impress Travel. Meet u all again.

5days Hanoi-Tam Coc-Ninh Binh-Halong Bay

We are family of 6 from Singapore and Malaysia joining Hanoi Impress Travel on 30 October-04 November 2019. We are really impressed with the company and tour guides with their professionalism and well organised arrangement. Lily is our guide for Hanoi, Tam Coc and Ninh Binh. She is excellent and very informative. She even taking care of us until late night. We walk us from Old Quarters to the hotel and brought us to try the famous road side foods. She even helped us to pay for our order to avoid overcharge by the stall. Another guide, David BK (Swan Cruise) brought us to Halong Bay cruise. He is excellent and humorous. He handles everything throughout the trip. He served meals for guests on the cruise, organised happy hour, guiding us for Kayaking, teaching Taiji and cooking class on cruise. The cruise ship is ok and the hotel in Hanoi-Adamas Hotel is small but new and clean with reasonable ok breakfast. Anyway thank you for the wonderful arrangement.

5D/4N Hanoi-Ninh Binh- Halong Bay

I was searching for a reliable travel agent and come across Impress Travel and the many reviews of them. I booked 5D/4N, Hanoi-Trang An-Halong Bay private trip for a party of 6. I communicated with Mr Daniel Dang throughout the time until the day we arrived. Mr Daniel is very patient, helpful, and accommodating to our requirements despite many changes made to the itinerary. The price is very reasonable unlike other travel agents.
Our tour guide, Lily was very friendly and efficientknowledgeable and speak good English.
Highly recommend “Trang An Boat Tour”. The caves was spectacular and beautifully.
2D/1N Halong Bay – Swan Cruise was awesome with amazing view of the cave. Our guide Mr David was hilarious, helpful, accommodating, and everything was well organized. Beside the normal
activities of kayaking, swimming, Tai Chi, culinary lesson, we are indeed very very fortunate to have
the chance to celebrate the “Mooncake Festival” while cruising and admiring the full moon.
Spread of mooncake, dessert, sweet snack, fruits, cocktail, beer and mini dragon dance complete the celebration. Tourists from all over the world party all night long.

Although we paid for a 3-star package, the hotel (Thang Long Espana Hotel), meals and transport provided were also above average. Our gang have a very enjoyable and memorable trip in Hanoi.
Impress Travel really impressed us with their service and will engage their service in future.
P/S:- Don’t worry, Impress Travel CAN be trusted.
