Escape the busy streets of Hanoi and reconnect with nature on our Pu Luong Eco Homestay & Local Market: 3 Days tour. It’s designed for responsible travellers, this immersive journey combines peaceful mountain scenery with authentic encounters in the Thai and Muong communities.

Unlike conventional Pu Luong Tours, this itinerary places local life at the heart of the experience. You will stay at a family-run eco homestay, walk through terraced fields, visit the traditional Pho Doan Market. As well as cooking with seasonal ingredients and discover how villagers use bamboo waterwheels to irrigate their crops.

Besides, Pho Doan Market is normally held on Thursday and Sunday mornings, so the standard tour should depart from Hanoi on Wednesday or Saturday. If your dates do not match a market day, we can replace the visit with a smaller village market or another community-based activity.

With gentle trekking, farm-to-table meals and plenty of time to appreciate the landscape. So, this three-day tour is ideal for first-time visitors seeking a slower and more meaningful way to explore rural Vietnam.

Detailed Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Hanoi – Pu Luong – Don Village and Eco Homestay

Your journey begins in the morning with pickup from your hotel in Hanoi Old Quarter. Then, you will leave the capital behind and travel southwest through the countryside toward Pu Luong Nature Reserve.

The drive normally takes approximately four to five hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. There will be a short comfort stop along the way.

On arrival, you will enjoy lunch prepared with fresh regional ingredients before checking in at a family-run eco homestay. Depending on availability, accommodation may be in a traditional stilt-house room or a private bungalow constructed with local materials.

In the afternoon, you will follow our local tour guide on a leisurely walk through Don Village. The path passes traditional houses, vegetable gardens and terraced fields beneath limestone mountains. Along the way, our tour guide will explain how local Thai families cultivate rice and manage water for their farms.

There will be time to stop at scenic viewpoints and speak with villagers when appropriate. Please ask before photographing local residents, particularly elderly people and children.

Next, you will return to the homestay and enjoy a traditional dinner featuring dishes. Such as grilled meat, mountain vegetables, bamboo-tube rice and seasonal soup. Vegetarian food can be prepared with advance notice.

After having dinner, you will relax in the quiet mountain atmosphere or join an optional cultural exchange with the host family.

Local guide’s note: Village paths may be uneven or muddy after rain. Wear shoes with reliable grip and carry only a small daypack during the walk.

Meals: Lunch and Dinner

Overnight: Eco homestay in Pu Luong

Day 2: Pho Doan Local Market – Hieu Village – Cooking Experience

In the morning, you should wake up early to listen the sounds of village life and enjoy breakfast at the homestay.

After enjoying breakfast, you will travel to Pho Doan Market, one of the area’s best-known traditional markets. Held on Thursday and Sunday mornings, it brings together people from Thai and Muong communities living across the surrounding valleys.

From here, you will walk through stalls filled with forest herbs, seasonal vegetables, rice, handmade textiles, farming tools and everyday household products. In addition, our tour guide will help explain unfamiliar ingredients and local trading customs. Rather than treating the market as a quick photo stop, you will have time to observe how it functions as an important social meeting place.

Besides, you may help select vegetables and spices for the day’s cooking activity. Buying directly from small vendors ensures that more tourism income remains within the community.

Next, you will continue to visit Hieu Village, a peaceful Thai settlement surrounded by forest and terraced fields. You also follow a countryside trail toward Hieu Waterfall, passing small farms and stilt houses along the way.

Note, weather and water conditions permitting, you may cool your feet or swim in a safe natural pool. The limestone can be slippery, so always follow your guide’s instructions and avoid climbing wet rocks.

At a local home, you can learn how several regional dishes are prepared. Depending on the season, the menu may include:

  • Rice cooked in bamboo tubes
  • Grilled chicken or pork with mountain spices
  • Stir-fried seasonal vegetables
  • Banana-flower salad
  • Fresh herbs and dipping sauces

Then, you will enjoy the meal together before spending more time discovering the village. In the late afternoon, you will return to your homestay for a rest.

Dinner is served at the homestay. The evening is free for conversation with your hosts or quiet relaxation overlooking the valley.

Local guide’s note: Pho Doan is a working rural market rather than a staged tourist attraction. Carry small Vietnamese banknotes, ask before photographing vendors and avoid blocking narrow aisles.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Overnight: Eco homestay in Pu Luong

Day 3: Cham Stream – Bamboo Waterwheels and Rafting – Hanoi

You will enjoy breakfast while taking in the morning scenery around your homestay. After checking out, you will travel toward the Cham Stream area.

Then, you will walk along a village path to see Pu Luong’s distinctive bamboo waterwheels. Local communities traditionally use these large handmade wheels to lift water from streams into bamboo channels, which then carry it toward nearby rice fields.

Afterward, you will continue traveling to the riverbank for a peaceful bamboo rafting experience. A local boatman will guide the raft slowly along the calm water. So, it offers you a final opportunity to appreciate the forest, farmland and limestone landscape.

The rafting activity is subject to water level and weather conditions. It may be shortened or replaced with a village walk when the river is unsafe.

After the activity, you will enjoy lunch at a local house or restaurant. Say goodbye to your local hosts and begin the return journey to Hanoi.

Finish the day, you will arrival in Hanoi is expected in the late afternoon or early evening. The tour concludes with drop-off in or near Hanoi Old Quarter.

Local guide’s note: Keep your phone and camera in a waterproof pouch during the rafting activity. Sandals with heel straps or quick-drying shoes are more practical than flip-flops.

Best Time to Visit Pu Luong

Pu Luong can be visited throughout the year, but the scenery changes with the agricultural calendar.

  • March to May: Comfortable temperatures, green valleys and pleasant trekking conditions.
  • Late May to early June: Young rice fields create vibrant green scenery.
  • September to October: Terraces gradually turn golden during the main harvest period, offering excellent photography conditions.
  • November to February: Cooler, quieter and occasionally misty; bring warm clothing.
  • July to August: Lush landscapes, but heavier rain may make trails muddy and roads less predictable.

Vietnam’s official tourism information recommends late May to early June for fresh green rice scenery and September to October for golden harvest landscapes.

What to Bring

  • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip
  • Lightweight and breathable clothing
  • A warm layer from November to February
  • Rain jacket or compact umbrella
  • Hat, sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Small backpack for village walks
  • Swimwear and a quick-drying towel
  • Waterproof pouch for electronics
  • Personal medication
  • Small Vietnamese banknotes for market purchases
  • Reusable shopping bag

Responsible Travel Guidelines

  • Refill your water bottle instead of buying multiple plastic bottles.
  • Do not leave rubbish on trails, farms or riverbanks.
  • Ask permission before entering homes or photographing residents.
  • Dress respectfully when walking through villages.
  • Do not distribute money, sweets or gifts directly to children.
  • Purchase locally made products when possible.
  • Avoid touching crops, farming equipment or livestock without permission.
  • Keep noise low in the evening, as the homestay remains part of a residential village.
  • Follow designated trails to avoid damaging rice fields and irrigation systems.

Important Notes

  • The itinerary should begin on Wednesday or Saturday when a guaranteed Pho Doan Market visit is required.
  • Market activities, agricultural work and available produce vary by season.
  • Walking distances can be adjusted to suit the group’s fitness level.
  • Routes may change because of rain, landslides, road maintenance or river conditions.
  • Swimming and bamboo rafting are only available when considered safe.
  • Rice terraces are working farms; their colours depend on planting and harvesting schedules.
  • A single-room supplement may apply to private accommodation.
  • Please advise us in advance about dietary restrictions, allergies or mobility concerns.

So glad I found Impress Travel

At first, I was just planning a trip to Hanoi, Halong Bay, and Ninh Binh for my small family.
Some close friends heard about our plans and wanted to join the trip. Eventually the group grew to be 7 families, with 25 adults and children of varying interests and expectations.
While I was excited at the prospect of touring Vietnam with good friends, I felt anxiously responsible to ascertain that everything must be well organized and everyone satisfied. This is why I am so very, very glad to have found Impress Travel. Mr. Mark responded quickly to all my inquiries, customized a wonderful trip according to the group's preferences, tirelessly worked out every detail for our 7-day trip, all at a reasonable price. Our guide, Trung, is knowledgeable, helpful, quick to respond to any need, and well-loved by everyone in the group. All my friends found this a marvelous trip, filled with beautiful memories, very much to my delight and relief!

Hanoi,Sapa,Hanoi,Danang,Hanoi 8D7N Online searching for a reliable travel agent n come across Impress Travel. Contacted

Accommodations were good especially Thang Long Espana Hotel (the Hotel Management automated upgraded us to VIP rooms. Is really unexpected). Overalled tours n places visited very well but only local guides r not good organizing the itineraries. Especially at Sapa Lao Cai and Cat Cat Villages walking tours push to the same day about 8hours for 7km (which is on 1st&2nd days arrival) so tiring. Lunch not good enough 4 so many hours of walking. In Danang Bana Hill the local guide shd arrange 2 visit Bana Hill 1st n not last coz' spend a short time n not nice photos taken due to rain (went in morning time no rain).
Overall tours, hotels, transportation, prices are strongly recommended. Especially Daniel Dang Impress Travel for welcoming and bye-bye wishes.
Daniel Dang tks from 8 of us having a wonderful time n memorable trip for 8D7N Sapa, Hanoi, Danang with Impress Travel. Meet u all again.

5days Hanoi-Tam Coc-Ninh Binh-Halong Bay

We are family of 6 from Singapore and Malaysia joining Hanoi Impress Travel on 30 October-04 November 2019. We are really impressed with the company and tour guides with their professionalism and well organised arrangement. Lily is our guide for Hanoi, Tam Coc and Ninh Binh. She is excellent and very informative. She even taking care of us until late night. We walk us from Old Quarters to the hotel and brought us to try the famous road side foods. She even helped us to pay for our order to avoid overcharge by the stall. Another guide, David BK (Swan Cruise) brought us to Halong Bay cruise. He is excellent and humorous. He handles everything throughout the trip. He served meals for guests on the cruise, organised happy hour, guiding us for Kayaking, teaching Taiji and cooking class on cruise. The cruise ship is ok and the hotel in Hanoi-Adamas Hotel is small but new and clean with reasonable ok breakfast. Anyway thank you for the wonderful arrangement.

5D/4N Hanoi-Ninh Binh- Halong Bay

I was searching for a reliable travel agent and come across Impress Travel and the many reviews of them. I booked 5D/4N, Hanoi-Trang An-Halong Bay private trip for a party of 6. I communicated with Mr Daniel Dang throughout the time until the day we arrived. Mr Daniel is very patient, helpful, and accommodating to our requirements despite many changes made to the itinerary. The price is very reasonable unlike other travel agents.
Our tour guide, Lily was very friendly and efficientknowledgeable and speak good English.
Highly recommend “Trang An Boat Tour”. The caves was spectacular and beautifully.
2D/1N Halong Bay – Swan Cruise was awesome with amazing view of the cave. Our guide Mr David was hilarious, helpful, accommodating, and everything was well organized. Beside the normal
activities of kayaking, swimming, Tai Chi, culinary lesson, we are indeed very very fortunate to have
the chance to celebrate the “Mooncake Festival” while cruising and admiring the full moon.
Spread of mooncake, dessert, sweet snack, fruits, cocktail, beer and mini dragon dance complete the celebration. Tourists from all over the world party all night long.

Although we paid for a 3-star package, the hotel (Thang Long Espana Hotel), meals and transport provided were also above average. Our gang have a very enjoyable and memorable trip in Hanoi.
Impress Travel really impressed us with their service and will engage their service in future.
P/S:- Don’t worry, Impress Travel CAN be trusted.
