Leave the busy streets of Sapa behind and step into the peaceful farming landscapes of Muong Hoa Valley. This immersive two-day journey combines scenic trekking with hands-on agricultural activities. As well as an overnight stay with a Giay family in Ta Van Village.
Unlike conventional Sapa Tours, this experience focuses on the rhythms of rural life. Here, you will walk between rice terraces, learn how mountain families cultivate their land. As well as gather seasonal vegetables and help prepare traditional dishes using ingredients grown nearby. Moreover, your Giay hosts will introduce you to their customs, family life and close relationship with the surrounding fields and forests.
In addition, the trekking routes are suitable for active first-time visitors and can be adjusted according to the weather. Note, trails may become muddy after rain, so good walking shoes and a light waterproof jacket are strongly recommended.
Day 1: Sapa – Y Linh Ho – Lao Chai – Ta Van Giay Village
Meals: Lunch and Dinner | Giay Homestay
At approximately 9:00 AM, you will meet our local tour guide in Sapa Town for a short tour briefing. After checking your equipment and water supply, begin the descent into Muong Hoa Valley.
The trail leads you through mountain scenery toward Y Linh Ho, a peaceful Black Hmong settlement surrounded by terraced fields. Along the way, our tour guide will explain how local people build and maintain the terraces. As well as controlling mountain water and select crops according to the season.
Next, you will continue to visit Lao Chai Village, walking beside fields of rice, corn and vegetables. In addition, you may meet local farmers carrying tools, tending buffaloes or working on the terraces. Please note to ask before photographing residents, particularly elderly people and children.
Then, you will enjoy lunch at a local home or small village restaurant. The meal normally features simple regional dishes prepared with seasonal produce.
In the afternoon, you will continue traveling along the Muong Hoa stream toward Ta Van. It is home to one of Sapa’s best-known Giay communities. After arriving at the family homestay, you will meet your hosts and settle into your sleeping area.
Later, you will join the family for a seasonal farming experience. Depending on the time of year, activities may include:
- Preparing soil or planting seedlings
- Transplanting or harvesting rice
- Watering and tending vegetables
- Collecting herbs and fresh produce
- Feeding chickens, ducks or other farm animals
Farming activities are authentic rather than staged, so the exact experience follows the family’s daily work and the agricultural calendar.
Before having dinner, you will accompany your host to the garden to gather vegetables and herbs. From here, you will help wash, prepare and cook several local dishes in the family kitchen. Especially, this is an informal opportunity to learn how mountain ingredients are used and to exchange stories with your hosts.
In the evening, you will enjoy dinner together. It’s followed by a relaxed cultural conversation about Giay family traditions, festivals, farming practices and village life.
Overnight at the Giay homestay in Ta Van.
Local guide’s note: Village paths can be slippery after rain. Walk slowly on stone steps and terrace edges, follow your guide and avoid entering planted fields without permission.
Day 2: Ta Van Farming Experience – Village Walk – Sapa
Meals: Breakfast and Lunch
In the morning, you will wake to the sounds of the village and enjoy breakfast prepared by your host family. Tea, coffee and locally available dishes will be served before the morning activities.
Afterward, you will join a gentle walk around Ta Van’s farming area. Besides, our tour guide and host will introduce traditional irrigation channels, household gardens and the seasonal crop cycle. Depending on current farm work, you may help weed a vegetable plot, collect animal feed, harvest produce or carry out another light agricultural task.
Then, you will return to the homestay for a short cooking session. Here, you will learn to prepare a simple Giay-inspired dish, such as seasonal stir-fried vegetables, spring rolls or a local herb dish. Recipes may vary because family meals are based on fresh ingredients available that day.
After checking out, you will follow quieter paths through the village and surrounding terraces. The walk offers views across Muong Hoa Valley and opportunities to observe wooden houses, small workshops and everyday rural life.
Next, you will stop for lunch at a local house or countryside restaurant. Afterward, you will continue traveling to the vehicle meeting point and transfer back to Sapa Town. The tour normally ends between 2:30 PM and 4:00 PM, depending on walking speed, weather and trail conditions.
Local guide’s note: Weather in Sapa changes quickly. Keep a light rain jacket and drinking water in your daypack. During colder months, bring warm layers because traditional homestays may have limited heating.
